Mud Crab

I absolutely love eating crab, especially mud crabs as they have the best texture and flavour in my opinion. They are definitely a luxury as they are quite expensive. So right now when they are in season and cheapest at about $25 per kilo is the best time to eat them. Cooking them like the Chinese restaurants with ginger, spring onion, shallots, chilli, garlic, soy sauce and oyster sauce is one way to serve them. I also like them steamed and then served with just lemon and pepper to taste the sweetness of the crab meat.

  1. Hey Thanh, this has nothing to do with mudcrab but I may have found a solution to your yo-yo icing dilemma! What do you think of lemon curd? Mmm mmm... tangy and creamy, not nearly as sugary or buttery as the other choices. Just saw this on a biscuit sandwich at uni yesterday and thought of your comment. :-)

  2. Cindy, what is lemon curd? I'll Google it up and see if it will work. It does need something not too sweet, in fact, slightly sour would be good, to break up the richness of the biscuits.

    I think another solution could be cream cheese with varying amounts of icing sugar. I baked some passionfruit cupcakes from the links that you had posted. I will post the results soon. Anyway, instead of using pure icing for the frosting, I found a cream cheese frosting that tastes really good and isn't too sweet if I don't add too much icing sugar to it and has a slightly sour tang to it from the cream cheese.

  3. Here's a lemon curd recipe from another blog. Depends on the recipe, but it's much more sour from the lemons than sweet from the sugar. Cream cheese is another great idea! I'm looking forward to seeing your cupcakes.

  5. Hungry Hamster, this would be the time to eat crab since it's the cheapest it will get. They taste great just steamed and eaten with some lemon and pepper if you want a simple way to eat them.

    Who are those people and why does buying crab there make me drive like them? :0) They are two mutually exclusive events.

  14. Anonymous, when in season (summer time), virtually all of the seafood shops in Springvale sell them. There are seafood stores in the two large food centres in Springvale along Buckingham Avenue.

    Same goes for Box Hill and Richmond, most of the seafood stores will have them when the mud crabs are in season.

      I've still seen them recently but don't tend to find them in Winter time.

      They can get up to about $50 a kilo for the really good dense mud crabs when at their peak. But when they're plentiful you can find them at $30-$40 per kilo.
